T9940 tape drives

The StorageTek® capacity-centric T9940 tape drive is ideal for applications that demand high throughput and capacity. The StorageTek T9940B tape drive stores up to 200 gigabytes of native data on a single tape cartridge at rates as high as 30 megabytes per second.

Applications
Backup and restore
Using T9940 tape drives for backup and restore shortens backup and recovery times with high transfer rates and fewer cartridge mounts and dismounts. The T9940 drive can be used in combination with other drives, including the T9840 fast-access tape drive, to match specific backup and restore performance and capacity needs.
Archiving
T9940 tape drives are a high-capacity choice for enterprise archiving systems requiring continuous use. When implemented with VolSafe® write-once-read-many (WORM) secure media, T9940 tape drives help secure critical data as it is archived.
Disaster recovery
T9940 tape drives are an integral part of enterprise disaster recovery processes that remotely vault data in tape form for recovery in case of disaster. Tapes can be physically transported to a remote site, created electronically with T9940 tape drives in a library at the remote location, or created simultaneously at both locations.

Benefits
Lower backup costs
The T9940B drive’s low dollar-per-gigabyte media helps you cut your total costs of backup. With data compression, it can store as much as 400-800 gigabytes on a single cartridge.
Lower storage costs
T9940 tape drives do the work of multiple typical mid-range drives. This enables you to minimize extra hardware, reduce SAN complexity and simplify management, to help reduce your costs.
Increased productivity
The high capacity T9940 tape drives minimize cartridge mounts, require fewer cartridges to manage for disaster recovery and improve automation efficiency.
Reduced backup windows
With its native data transfer rate of 30 megabytes per second, or up to 70 megabytes per second with compression, the T9940B drive helps you store more data in less time to meet your shrinking backup windows.

Features
Standard features:
SAN-readiness
A native two-gigabit fabric-aware Fibre Channel interface makes the T9940B drive ready for the demands of high-speed SAN environments and storage server networks.
Multi-platform connectivity
T9940 drives run on today’s popular operating environments. The T9940B supports two gigabit Fibre Channel connectivity. The T9940A drive supports ESCON, SCSI and one gigabit Fibre Channel connectivity.
StorageTek VolSafe media support
The T9940B drive supports VolSafe® cartridges, a high-capacity write-once-read-many (WORM) storage solution. VolSafe is a non-erasable, non-rewritable tape media for archiving critical data.
Tape compatibility
The T9940B drive provides backward read compatibility with 9940A cartridges. It can rewrite StorageTek 9940A tape cartridges with three times more data, for extended investment protection.
