Extended High Performance Data Mover (ExHPDM) software |
|
StorageTek® Extended High Performance Data Mover (ExHPDM)
software maximizes the effectiveness of the tape
subsystem and speeds the backup and restore process,
allowing fast data transfer to and from tape. The
software resides on a MVS host. |
|
Applications |
Backup and restore
ExHPDM software improves the performance of mainframe
backup and restore, shortening backup and restore times
and allowing more data to be protected with existing
systems. |
|
Benefits |
Less hardware
required
ExHPDM software interleaves data from several disk
volumes to a single tape during backup, requiring
fewer tape drives for the same amount of data. Fewer
cartridges are needed because it automatically
stacks multiple backups on each cartridge, freeing
library slots and minimizing manual handling for
offsite storage. |
Ready for more
ExHPDM software accommodates data growth. It enables
twice as many volume backups as traditional
one-to-one style or serial backup methods. Data
growth doesn't lengthen the backup window. Even if
the backup window is not yet critical, ExHPDM
software can accomplish backups in the same amount
of time while freeing transports for batch
activities. |
Faster backup
Without ExHPDM software, data transfer is limited by
slow disk drives. With ExHPDM software, multiple
backup and restore jobs are completed as fast as
single jobs. Backups run 50 percent faster or more. |

|
Features |
Enhancement capabilities
ExHPDM software enhances the capabilities of IBM's
DFSMSdss and Innovation Data Processing's FDR suite
of products to maximize the effectiveness of
high-performance tape subsystems. |
More disk
space
Data from multiple disk backups are written to tape
in 256 kilobyte "super blocks." By combining
multiple backup streams for storage on a single tape
drive, ExHPDM software allows the simultaneous
backup of multiple disks using a single tape drive. |
Specialized technology
ExHPDM software is a type of virtual tape, optimized
for backup and restore processing. Its interleaving
technology allows multiple backup and restore jobs
to access a single real tape drive. |
